The Steepest Roads

Now I see it the video. I hope they weren't hurt! It's a very good thing there wasn't a motorcycle behind him ...

"It's on Koh Samui according to the photographer on his Facebook page." I think some context was lost in the Facebook translation, and my Koh Samui guess was wrong. The photographer did talk about taking photos on Koh Samui in his thread, but I now think Dodraugen's query road is the same as Moor66's "parachute mountain road in Chonburi." The clothing is also a better match—not many riders on Samui wear full face helmets.

The "parachute mountain road in Chonburi" is the access road to the Khao Ang Kaew Viewpoint at 13.16246,101.41687, at about 270 m elevation. It is partly visible in the satellite view but the road is not included in Google Maps nor in Open Street Maps.

Watch these two short clips and see if you agree this is the same road:

Photos of the viewpoint and road from Google Maps:

Khao Ang Kaew Viewpoint

In the Google Map photos you see pickup trucks at the viewpoint, some of them carrying paragliders and their equipment. That road in many places isn't wide enough to pass a truck, and in many of the same places the road too steep for a motorcycle to stop, especially going up. A significant risk on this road is encountering traffic blocking the road, and losing momentum.

I understand the Kao Ang Kaew road is currently closed due to the recent social media frenzy & subsequent failed ascent attempts.

The road must have been safer before it was paved, and only 4WD and dirt bikes went up the track.

A little post again about the Rural road 3054 in Chiang Mai and Tak provinces from Mae Tuen at the end of R1099 to R105 near Mae Ramat.

I rode it in December 2023 with a mate and again last sunday with my wife as a pillion.

Again - sorry didnt take too much pics. I told my wife to take some pics as we road on but as a thai she got nausea and was near vomiting several times so we had to stop for her nausea to calm down and she didnt take any pics.

First of all this road is 74 kms long from start to end as the kilometer markings indicates…

The «0» marker is at R105 near Mae Ramat and the «74» marker is at the end of R1099 at Mae Tuen.
So I might owe Morningrider and appology there. However down to Mae Ramat there will be a few more kms.

There is no doubt in my mind that this is the most spectacular road I have ever ridden in Thailand and I must have clocked in at much more than 100 k kms by now (more than 60 ks on my trusty Crf, approx 30 ks on my Tenere and many kms on numerous rentals)

Yes I know many of you guys who lives here year round have ridden much much more but still….

R1243 in Nan is spectacular (but was more spectacular before it was paved) R1333 in Nan is also fantastic, R1257 is also great, Rural route 4010 Phrae and Nan is gorgous, Rural 4009 in MHS province is ditto and very steep at some point. And many many many more… but this RR3054 is beyond all of these.

There numerous are signs telling that the road have a steepness incline of more than 20 % and also a few signs of inclines above 30 %….

IMG_9722.jpeg

There are small bits of roads elsewhere that can be steeper but nowhere with that many hills that are so steep! (That I know of though….)

I was down in first gear at least 10 times and I cannot ever remember that I had to be in first that many times on other roads. Once or twice on RR4009 and 4010 maybe….

I was very nervous that I would cook the brakes at many points, so I stopped a couple of times to let them cool down and my wifes stomach to calm down too…

Gods chosen ones is also present here it seems…. (sighs) but at least it was a conveniant place to calm down the stomach of my wife and cool down the Crf brakes.

The views along this road is absolutely gorgous and I feel really bad for not stopping and taking some more pics.

Ride it guys if you havent! Its a nervewrecking but glorious ride!
