My first bikes in Thailand were Honda Wing 125s because that was all you get.
They were a joy to ride & my bet times riding in Thailand will always be with the Honda Wing, because they were small, you couldn't go fast enough to hurt yourself, you could step off one anytime and let it drop. And when everyone had the same bike the "races" were always even, just like in Moto3!

HONDA NV400SP

Then big bike grey imports came. My first big bike in Thailand was the fabulous Honda NV400SP.

Vtwin, shaft drive. A fabulous reliable "tractor" touring bike for the road conditions & network of the time.

91-92 Doi Larng or on R1089?

In 93 I got hit by an orange crush public bus on R11 North of Uttaradit.

However, the Snail was able to do a superb rebuild, and it lasted several more years until I started riding regularly in Laos and bought a Honda 250 Baja for riding on the rough Laos roads.

Then when Laos first opened up I bought a nice 250 Baja.

1762779497438.jpeg

I only had the Baja for a short time & got an offer for what I'd paid for it, in exchange for the Africa Twin, plus a few more baht.
I jumped at the chance & kept the AT for 15 years. God's gift to RTW bikers & adventure riders.

That red - white - blue livery on the AT was a sensational chic puller every time!

As the high kms rose above 300,000 kms there were a few frequent electrical shorts as connectors & fuses burned out.
The solution was to hard wire as many as practical.
1762756594900.jpeg

Eventually the fuel bill for the AT became too much @ 3 baht a kms when fuel was expensive, so I with great reluctance I sold the AT ang got a Versys 650 in November 2012.

The AT 3rd time round the clock 20.11.2011.
1764171307487.jpeg

I still miss that bike, the greatest motorcycle made IMHO.

(The Africa Twin goes around again.)

Kawasaki Versys 650
Bought from Gary Schack on 15.8.12 with 21,400 kms for 235,000 baht.

Black was the colour.

# 1 was the number.
1764172050976.jpeg

I don't like black coloured bikes, so soon tarted the bike up to look like a mini AT.

1762704016307.jpeg

100,000 kms was clocked up on the Versys, and it too went all over Laos.

I clocked up 100,000 kms on the Versys

1764170780071.jpeg

It started to burn oil; so rather than spend money on stripping it down, sold it & started my Suzuki Vstrom love affair(s).

Before selling the Versys I had it restickered, so it did not look so tired,

1764175196467.jpeg

The bike was sold on 22.05.15 with 101,500 kms for 130,000 baht.

I dropped the Versys once on R118, heading to Laos.
(Ooops done it yet again - another spill)

Suzuki Vstrom 650 x 3

After the AT came a series of Suzuki VStrom 650s.
29th May 2015 - Vstrom 650 # 1 - The blue one. XT version.

1764147763001.jpeg

In 48 hours I clocked the first 1,000 kms up.

Part of that was in a horrific rainstorm.

The Vstrom was quickly stickered & set up the way I like my bikes.

A Vstrom well set up is almost as good as an AT, minus the 21inch front wheel!

The Blue XT Vstrom went all over Laos in a few quick years.

The extremely kind gentleman, mate & Laos lover Peter Faessler, living in Nong Khai, drove up to Luang Prabang to the rescue.
After a few days drinking in Luang Prabang we went back to Chiang Mai, crossing at Phu Du in the dark.

Peter stayed 1 night in Chiang Mai and drive back to Nong Khai via Phu Du the next day!

The bike was stripped down at Piston Shop in Chiang Mai.
1764222793404.jpeg

At 113,280 kms the bike was rebuilt / repaired by Liam on the cheap, after Piston Shop's strip down.
3 months later the bike was back on the road & I can only commend Liam for his skill in getting a beaten-up bike back on the road cheaply.

Re-tarting & new stickering followed & I was a happy little camper back on the Khong.

And that was it for #1 Vstrom. It had lasted another 62,000 kms before it started to age significantly & was sold at 176,113 kms on the clock.
1764172674607.png

Just a thought?
I'm now on number Vstrom # 3 three and perhaps should stop being involved in crashes.
I sometimes wonder if the Vstrom is jinxed, or even if is the faster more powerful bikes that are the issue.
In 15 years, I never had a crash with the slow, rock-solid AT, apart from dropping it on bulldust and rocks in Laos on R4 Muang Ngeun- Hongsa,
(Finally Did It....)

130314047-m-jpg.5871

So, in retrospect I agree I / we are more on the gas and riding faster than I was on the AT. Of note too, is that the roads are also a lot faster - dual carriageway & generally a good surface, most of the time.

Why we keep at it:
(Accidents, safety and why we ride.)

Apologies for the long self-indulgent post, but I wanted to look back on all the magnificent times I had with this bike.
Perhaps a book of bike travels beckons?
Vstrom # 2 next.
And for those who wonder about the photos of girls with the bike, try asking a guy to stand by your bike, or on your bike for a photo. It doesn't work very well. The girls like it & give you one hell of a beautiful smile! A winner ever time.

Nice write up David and some great pics as well!

I am contemplating buying a V-Strom in Thailand. A gen2 can be had for around 100 k nowadays, a gen3 costs at least 150, maybe closer to 200 k for a good low milage one.
How much better do you reckon the gen3 is compared to gen2

Cheers!
