So are we saying that Apple Maps have got it wrong? Is there any other mapping where is say the 1048?

It seems R1048 was the former roadnumber for that road:

Highway No. 1048 Don Chai - Sawankhalok is a former highway with 2 and 4 lanes (in Thung Saliam Subdistrict Municipality) connecting traffic between Thoen District, Lampang Province to Sawankhalok District, Sukhothai Province, allowing for more convenient and faster travel. The total distance is 92.319 kilometers. This route is winding along the mountainside, especially near Thoen District, which is very steep. Currently, it is combined with Highway No. 106 Sawankhalok - Umong[1]

Interestingly, this just turned up in my news feed.

per Google Translate

Expanded to 4 lanes completed on Toll Road 106 Mae Pa Phai - Mae Tun Li District, Lamphun Province (Km.60 - Km.74 or Km.154 - Km.168) The distance is more than 14 km to increase the efficiency of travel in this area (which is a long road from Sawankhalok District, Sukhothai Province to the Chiang Mai-Lampang Super Highway intersection, the distance to Doi Suthep and Mae Rim District, Chiang Mai Province, a distance of more than 257 km with 2-4 lanes alternating, so it is another important road connecting the Central to the North) (Thank you for the information and photos from the Department of Highways).
