It's that wonderful, crazy time of the year.
It's been raining all day in Chiang Khong city, plus in many other places in the Top North - Chiang Rai and Phayao.
The roads are treacherous, and there are thousands of drunk people out there on the roads.
So PLEASE TAKE EXTRA CARE and STAY SAFE.
The old GTR fellow stays home at this time of the year so as not to be just another statistic at the most dangerous time of the year to be out travelling.
Whatever you're doing, enjoy, be happy, and be safe. There are plenty of months left in the year to go out riding.

The first two days of the seven dangerous Songkran holidays saw a total of 460 road accidents, resulting in 59 deaths and 458 injuries, the Road Safety Centre announced on Sunday.

Happy Songkran everyone.
Luckily this year the weather is cooler and air is clean as unexpected weather changed all for the better. Just imagine the temperature being higher by 10°C how much more madness would this cause on the roads. For me staying home since 10 years is the rule. Stocking up on all i need and awaiting the days after the 20th when it is more safe out there again. Stay safe and enjoy the quiet and safety of your home.

Happy Songkran; Its wet and wild in Pattaya but seems to be limited; officially to one day this year.
planning a trip to Chiang mai but this may be the wet and hot time of year; May. Try to get more data on best bike to used on the CM to Pai multi turn roads. I read everything can be used. 125cc scooters to heavy Harleys ?

planning a trips to CM to arrive 1st june. The drive to Pai. Could be a bit wet. Are Helmets decent at the rental shops for a normal 3xl size ?
Coming into Bus station 3, Arcade2 in Chaing Mai; but bike rental shops seem to be scattered, not easily accessable. Some closed on Sunday.
Need 1 125cc and another Nmax size. or larger

Ed i do not think you can get a 3XL helmet (international sizes here stop at XXL) at any rental shop and do you want to have sweat from 50++ people on your head ? Not to talk about the rancid smell they all emit. If I travel i have always my own in a helmet bag and was never refused as carry on.
As for rentals, there's plenty of them, i used Mr. Mechanic shop in the past and was always happy.

They have a big choice there and i can recommend: Aerox & Nmax 155 or the Pcx or Click for automatic scooters (i must admit i do not know which bikes they have right now), if you need gears then look out for XSR or Exciter 155 that are recommended.
Just around the corner from Mr.Mechanic is the UN Irish Pub who have a real big and tasty breakfast not the rubbish ABF served at most others.....

Generally, drive careful as the Maemalai to Pai section of road is known for some brainless pickup/minibus drivers who like to cut corners on your lane. Further on did it rain heavily so a lot of sand/dirt on the roads. Some parts might have had a mudslide so always stay alert for anything around the next corner. Be also aware about young farang on Scoopy's with soup bowls on their heads with a permanent smile and small eyelenses in the middle of the road sometimes in packs of 4-6.....
