At Ban Poeng Khloeng, just before the civil war started, I crossed the border. I rode slowly and waved to the (armed) border guards. I just played "Dumb Farang" and kept on going, like I always do at Thai Police checkpoints. They waved back and stepped aside. I rode into Myanmar, up the hill, and took photos. I hadn't expected to cross, of course, so I hadn't planned a route and didn't want to push my luck, so a few minutes later I turned around and came back. The guards were just as friendly in the opposite direction. Some photos of the border from the other side, not as interesting as on the Thai side:

another option might be to take the crossing track literally through the 'hole in the hedge' (about 100m to the left of the Thai side guarded (formal) border crossing ; )
