I'll be going the opposite way on aprox 19th Dec, from Phonsavan to Vang Viang with a stop in Long Tieng.
Below is more or less what the planned route will look like,.
Not sure if any of this is helpful to you.. but as of a couple weeks ago, I was told that some of the route from Long Tieng towards Phonsavan was messy but passable...which sounds like fun.

Thanks guys… we’re hoping that the wet season is over (???) and hopefully will be relatively dry…and we will be on 250’s . There are 2 options? -either coming from the west ( van vieng) or the south (muang hom)… hoping we can do it in 1 day with a early start out of vientiene.
I imagine there are still guest houses available in long tieng.
After that will try and get to LS85 and back to vientiene in 5 days…
