Bumped into the Song Phu Nong village Kamnan this arvo at the Wat Had Bai festival & he says the night of the 16th February 2026 will be their big night for Lahu dancing.

My 2026 Lahu New Year at Songphinong.
The masterplan was to hit SPN for the big night of dancing on the 16th, especially since I'd met the village kamnan at the festival in Had Bai a few weeks earlier.

However as luck would have it, I was forced to go to Chiang Rai on the 16th for some emergency dental treatment.
My interest in the SPN New Year was kept up by the sensational SPN Lahu gal, Ms Penny at the Teak Garden hotel, sending me pics & VDO of the day / night events on the 16th.

Back to Chiang Khong on the 15th, Penny sent another message in the afternoon to "re-invite" lung to the festivities.
I rocked up at 6pm & enjoyed a beer chatting with Penny, to patiently wait for the event to get underway again.

Eventually Penny excused herself to head off for a family clan dinner somewhere.

Lung spotted a young Lahu gal for a pic.

Not a great deal of activity you might say & you would be correct.

I was told to join the kamnan and village schoolteachers, and a chair was pulled out for me at the group table.
The kamnan slightly inebriated, couldn't remember me, suggested I go and sit at another table with what appeared to be the single mums group, and all well and truly on the way - drunk. The conversation was minimal & I consumed another big Leo by myself.

To some great amusement, a group of drunk women were playing a type of bowls, but with rolling nuts.

The wobbly antics of the Lahu gals was certainly entertaining, but after an hour the novelty for me wore off.
I was told to wait for the dancing to start in the next 10 minutes, but after 30 minutes I gave up & went home.
I reckon I will try another ethnic group & village next year.
