Checking tracks and attractions over a lengthy breakfast the following day, I realised I had gone past a few places and missed another one that interested me. Some backtracking and wandering around in circles made up the day.

Prasat Ban Bu
70 km from Buriram
5 km from Phanom Rung.
6 km from Prasat Muang Tam
2 km from Kuti Ruesi Ban Nong Bua Rai
80 km from Surin

Prasat Ban Bu is one of the 17 dharmasalas, or rest/health centres, built by King Jayavarman VII (1181-1220) on the road from Angkor to Phimai.
It is one of only two in Thailand that have been restored, the other being Prasat Ta Muean.

This small-scale ancient sanctuary is built from laterite into a single tower. Its rectangular plan faces the east, and windows are drilled into its southern wall.

Inside, there is an altar with a lintel and a carved image of the Lord Buddha in a meditation posture.

The sanctuary is located in the compound of Ban Bu Witthaya San School, Tambon Chorakhe Mak.
Find the school & the ruins are on the school grounds.

These small sanctuaries served as hospitals and were installed as a form of public works and a gesture of Buddhist faith on the part of the monarch.

As is common with most such 'hospitals', the plan comprises a small tower surrounded by a low wall, a 'library' in the southeast corner and an east-facing gopura (gateway).

I never actually got to these ruins.
Navigating with Google Maps, I ended up on a confusing series of bumpy dried mud tracks in the rice fields & eventually gave up as I noted approaching rain clouds and bailed out.
Back at home, I could see that I was within 700 metres of the site but on the wrong side of an irrigation canal!

Surin City
A couple of excellent rest days & nights in Surin followed due to my satisfaction finding the superb Martina Resort Hotel and the 90s Pub.

The Martina Hotel with undercover parking & fabulous rooms.

Martina Location:

The 90s Pub was conveniently located a mere 600 metres from the Martina.
It had great music, plus friendly staff & customers. I was highly impressed.

A certain young Rajhabat student studying engineering got my attention and held it for the few days I was in Surin.

A 90s return beckons.

I also had a great time hooking up with Toby from Surin.
Meeting up with a fellow "single expat" rider who loves to get out there and ride, exploring local attractions is always good.
Toby & I had some beautiful stories & notes to swap.

Some rain in Surin hampered other activities, but for this trip, Surin and Phimai were the best two towns I stayed in. I would love to go back, or I should have spent more time in both places. The initial deciding factor in both cases is the fabulous value-for-money hotels, plus proximity to nightlife and eating places. The Martina had a very acceptable restaurant with an outdoor terrace.

The young engineering student at the 90s Pub gave me the outstanding tip for the Surin Tak Bat elephant festival, which I knew nothing about, but was the highlight of this trip. The event blew me away!
