Just arrived in Chang Mai. Borrowing a friend's bike. He will lend me the papers and a letter of authority. Will I be okay to cross into Laos at Friendship bridge by Chiang Khong and re enter down towards ventienne? Thanks!

Yes, you should be ok, only the over friendly Lao policeman at the bridge may request you to use his approval service for 2,000 baht.
