Seems to be happening in the north Tony as we speak.

I`ll probably start putting 91 E10 in the scooter and a mix of benzine 95 and 91 E10 on alternative fills in the VFR.

Ok, rather than feed the rumor mill I just called the PTT Call Center (1365) and they confirmed that the Thai government has indeed mandated that gasoline (benzene) 91 be discontinued.

Many stations still have stock, but when it's gone it will be replaced by gasoline (benzene) 95.

Dont know about other brands but with PTT it's not a huge price difference between gasoline 91 and 95; 44 and 46 baht a liter respectively.

It is a waste of money to run an engine designed for lower octane fuel on high octane, and it would be interesting if anyone can come up with an article that explains WHY the government has chosen to phase out gasoline 91, but TiT I doubt there's any good reason.

Ride on!

The 91 benzine i`ve bought in the last week has been around 45 baht/L and the 95 was closer to 50!

Reckon it wasn't from PTT then since they set their prices nation-wide: http://www.pttplc.com/th/pages/home.aspx

As far as I can tell every company that sells fuel in Thailand publishes the prices on their website. This is perhaps required by Thai law?

Today, in Pattaya and needing gasoline, I found that PTT, Petronas and Texaco had all now had discontinued 91-benzine
and now sold only gasahol. All three had evidently changed their signage just before closing last night!
I found that ESSO also had also stopped selling 91-benzine in favor of 91-gasahol...BUT they now offered 95-benzine.
Recently, I'd been paying 44-Bt for 91-benzine and the what was pleasantly surprising is that the 95-benzine at ESSO was only 38-Bt!!

95 Gasahol is roughly 1.5 baht a litre more or there bouts..

Now when in the sticks and no petrol station pay through the nose for Benzine from a drum or small station...

When all my bikes happily run off the lower taxed Gasohol...

So expect to see the drum prices drop too as they start to offer 95 Gasohol. :)

Funny how the cycle goes - the OP was in September 2008.
No doubt it will change again in the coming years & most of us will still be riding our bikes & filling them up with some sort of fuel to keep 'em & us going.

May be some confusion?
Yep...I'm now embarrassed and was confused at the time of purchase.
Below is a pix of the sign at the Esso station; there were no red colored signs on any of the pumps
as occurred for 91-octane.
I asked the attendant if the sign for 95 was benzine, he said yes! Obviously I don't read Thai!

So, will a the gasohol I purchased have a negative effect on my old '98 Suzuki dirt bike?

This Orange color is typical for 95 gasohol. If the alcohol in the fuel is going to affect the rubber parts in the fuel system it is not going to happen overnight, so use up as much of the tank as you can and refill with benzine
. Any alcohol left will be so diluted it cannot cause any problem

Techron silver 91 from Caltex is Benzine isn't it? Only making that assumption as the pump is red and is 44/baht a liter as opposed to their green pump showing 91 at 38/baht liter.

Look for the one on the price board out the front at around 46-47 baht/L....color and price on the board is the same as on the pump.

Fuel line on our 2010 Vespa broke from gasohol. The shop installed a new one but said we should use 95, gasohol or not. Not before cheekily calling me cheap for using 91 555.

At first I thought that doesn't make any sense but then maybe 95 gasohol has less gasohol in it? Or maybe fewer shenanigans going on? I mean who knows how much of the stuff they're cutting it with... maybe they do it less with 95?

He was very specific about gasohol 95 being "OK", I asked him three times, and the wife asked him too.

As the Vespa was down, I switched to the old 2005 Honda Wave, my first bike in Thailand, was standing around for 2 months with 91 gasohol in the tank. Worked perfectly. As always.

Sorry Knikster, I've met a lot of 'informed' Thai Motorcycle technicians :-?

Gasohol 91 & 95 are both E10 meaning they have 10% Ethanol. Gasohol 91 is mixed with 91 octane Gasoline and 95 with 95 octane.
