Hi

Not sure if I am posting in the right place here!

I did MHS loop last year and this year (Early November) want to go in the other direction.
I have about a week (maybe a day more or less)
I am going to go up to Fang and then probably Chiang Rai.

I suppose my first question would be
Do I explore up to the border (Mae Sai,Chiang Saen and thereabouts)
or I was thinking of going down to Phayao and then Nan)
To ride 1148 though the trip to Nan does not seem very interesting.

Anyway - any thoughts that anyone has about what you would do will be helpful.

Thanks
Richard

Wherever you are in the North, it is only a day ride back to "base" at Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.
Check out this GTR trip planning guide for ideas.

The Golden Triangle – Laos Border Run

The Way To Go
Chiang Mai – Chiang Dao – Arunothai – Fang – Tha Ton – Doi Mae Salong – Thoed Thai – Doi Tung – Mae Sai – GT – Chiang Saen – Chiang Khong – Pha Tang – Phu Chi Fah – Chiang Kham – Tha Wang Pa – Pua – Doi Phukha – Nan – Chiang Muan – Phayao – Mae Kachan – Chiang Mai. Or from Nan – Wiang Sa – Na Noi – Khun Satan – Phrae – Lampang – Chiang Mai. Or do these in reverse. Please yourself where you sleep, but you should never be more than 45 minutes away from cozy accommodation.

++ Loads of links for trip reports in that link.
Chiang Rai province has the most interesting attractions to stop & see.
Nan province is basically just about riding, with less attractions perhaps.

The slower you go the more you will see.
The faster you go the more kms & pure riding enjoyment (Nan).
Take your time & dont hurry too much, because you will only want to come back on the same route, as you missed so much.
