The ride along the Mekong is great.. But the ride up route 4 from Muang Nan is horrible.. Avoid it if you can and ride up the Mekong trail if you have an Enduro / Dirt bike.. Route 4 is thick with white dust.. you can't see your hand in front of your face when a truck passes plus the road is full of potholes. Some real huge potholes..
If I was doing this again.. I would only go south and further on south, no loop back or if going north.. Turn off at Muang Nan and ride along the Mekong to Luang Prabang and avoid route 4.. Much nicer and enjoyable.
