Met a guy with a Monster 795, he told me he paid 400,000 baht for it, new - can that be?

I googled 795 and 796, seems like the 795 is "for the Asian market", but the 796 seems to be 50% more expensive.

Can anybody fill me in? Can you really buy a Monster with a single-sided swing arm for 400K?

Even with cheaper parts the price sounds too good. Or does it have something to do with import taxes?

The Monster 795 has been discontinued now. It was 399,000THB when launched back in 2012. I think the 796 was launched in Thailand in 2014 at about 420,000 with ABS. Both have been discontinued and superseded by the Monster 821 starting at 469,000 THB.
